5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Windows

Central Exteriors • September 1, 2021

Windows are not only important to a home’s design but an essential element of its climate control and environmental barrier systems. Over time, window seals can deteriorate, causing air and moisture to leak through. This impacts the home’s energy efficiency. Fortunately, there are clear signs to look for when this happens. Most notably are high energy bills, but other problems like noise and moisture can indicate a problem. New window installation is sometimes recommended when a combination of these events occurs.

High Energy Bills

As windows age, they gradually lose energy efficiency. This is caused by a combination of factors. For example, windows tend to slightly expand and retract as the temperature fluctuates. One indication that the windows are losing energy efficiency is a rise in your energy bills. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 25-30% of residential energy use is due to heat gain and heat loss through the home’s windows. If you notice a spike in an electric bill without any reasonable cause, it may be time for the installation of
energy-efficient windows.

Condensation Build-up

Condensation itself is not always a bad thing. If the air on one side of the window is dramatically more humid than the other, condensation will form. It becomes a problem when the condensation forms regularly, and the build-up causes mold or water damage. If this is the case, it indicates that the window seal is no longer functioning properly and new window installation is needed. This can be a particular concern if one window or bay of windows has significantly more condensation than the others in the home. If you are concerned about the amount of condensation on one or more windows, consult Central Exteriors and one of our professionals can let you know if it is a problem.

Increased Noise Level

Depending on where you live, street noise and air traffic can be loud and ever-present. If the noise starts to become a nuisance, new window installation may be an option in reducing the overall noise that comes through the windows. Remember, if air can get through, sound can get through. Sound will travel the area of least resistance, through small holes or spaces at the seals of the windows. Fortunately, caulking the window seals can help stave the worst of this problem.

Faulty Operation

Faulty operation is one of the more urgent reasons to replace your windows. If a window will not close, the drafts of air that enter the house will raise your electric bill. A window that remains open leaves the home vulnerable to intruders, both animal, and human. If a window will not open, this could be a serious hazard in the case of a house fire. If even one of your windows is not fully operational, you should have it looked at immediately.

Physical Damage

Physical damage, no matter how small, can cause larger problems in the future. A small crack will let air seep in or out of your home, causing energy bills to rise. Furthermore, physical damage to windows shows burglars vulnerable points of the home. Small damage like cracks can often be repaired and will not have to lead to full replacement with new windows.

Windows perform a very important function for your home. They act as a barrier to extreme temperatures, unwanted intruders, and noise. Most of all, windows are essential to your home’s climate control systems. If you are tired of paying astronomical energy bills, you may want to consider energy-efficient windows.
